La Vuelta 18: 100 days to go

news17.05.2018Pre-race

Just 100 days before the start of the 73rd edition of La Vuelta, all the locations that will host the 21 departures and finish-lines of this year's route are already getting all the preparations underway for their respective stages. The Province of Málaga will host the official departure as well as almost 400 km of stages in this cycling celebration that will kick off on the 25th of August.

JAVIER GUILLÉN: “Excitement and adrenaline”

“100 days before the start of La Vuelta 18, we are already beginning to feel the excitement and the adrenaline of the countdown. Even though we are already veterans – this year is Unipublic's 40th year organising La Vuelta – we still feel the same thrill as we did when we first started. On top of that, we have the support of a city like Málaga, that already has 30 departures and finish-lines under its belt, and will host an official departure yet again this year (after it did so already in 2000 and 2006). We have worked shoulder-to-shoulder with all the host cities so that fans can enjoy a truly spectacular edition”, says Javier Guillén, Director of La Vuelta.

MÁLAGA, OFFICIAL DEPARTURE

The iconic Pompidou Centre, that stands on Pier One of the Málaga Port, will be the colourful setting for La Vuelta 18's send off on the 25th of August. The first stage will consist of an 8 km individual time-trial that will end at the Plaza de la Constitución, right in the heart of the mythical Larios Street. The city will also be alive with La Roja in the days leading up to the departure with the team presentation and the Parque Vuelta. All of this will be managed from the organisation's headquarters, which will be located in the Málaga Provincial Council Building, next to the press centre and the accreditations office.

‘LA VIDA SON SOLO DOS DÍAS'

Nuria Fergó will sing the official song of La Vuelta 18. ‘La vida son solo dos días' is the name of the song that will accompany the peloton during three weeks of competition. Nerja, the Andalusian singer's birthplace, is one of the territories that will see the race pass by in its fourth stage. The singer's flamenco style will be a nod to the presence of Andalusia in the Spanish tour.

LA VUELTA JUNIOR COFIDIS

For the eighth consecutive year, Unipublic and Cofidis organise La Vuelta Junior Cofidis, an initiative aimed at conveying the values of this sport to children between the ages of 9 and 12. For this reason, we also provide workshops regarding road rules, safety and healthy eating habits to different schools in localities involved in the race. More than 25,000 children have already received this training and, later, 1650 students went on to participate in La Vuelta, completing the final kilometre of the stages with flat finales and sharing the podium with professional cyclists. This year, the children will once again be the stars in 11 stages.
