The last time the Vuelta had a stage in Gijón was in 2012, when Joaquim ‘Purito' Rodríguez rode through its streets wearing the red jersey. Gijón has a strong industrial identity but has gradually been able to develop its service sector thanks to tourism. The transformation of its port area, its prestigious University, new green spaces and an extensive collection of libraries and museums have turned the Asturian locality into a city that looks to the future.
