The rules are the bible for a sporting competition. Through their balance and subtleties, they must ensure equality, motivate the riders and help spectators and viewers to understand the event. Here is an outline of the main points in the rules.

What is at stake?

  • General classification

    Jersey for the rider who comes first in the general classification according to the times obtained in each stage.
    The general classification has been sponsored by Carrefour.

  • Points classification

    Jersey for the rider who comes first in the point-based classification Points are given to the riders according to the place they obtain in each of intermediate sprint or stage arrival.
    The points classification has been sponsored by Škoda.

  • King of the mountain classification

    Jersey for the rider who comes first in the mountain classification according to the points obtained at each point-incurring mountain pass.
    The king of the mountain classification has been sponsored by Loterias y Apuestas del Estado

  • Combined classification

    Jersey for the rider who comes first in the combined classification. It reflects the riders' consistence, taking into account the place that each rider has obtained in the three previous classifications.
    The combined classification has been sponsored by Fertiberia.

  • Team classification

    Award given the basis of the sum of the three best individual times from each team in each stage ridden.
    The team classification has been sponsored by Azkar

  • Stage classification

    Award given to the rider who crosses the finish line first.
    The stage classification has been sponsored by Cofidis.

  • Most combative rider prize

    Award given to the rider who, according to the TV spectators, has shown the most fighting spirit in each stage.
    The most combative rider prize has been sponsored by Vodafone.

  • Fair Play award

    An award that values those riders who, up until that stage, have accrued the least number of penalties and have the best ranking in the individual classification, or those who have had an outstanding sporting gesture. The award will be awarded in 10 out of the 21 stages.
    The fair Play award has been sponsored by Ecopilas - Ambilamp.
