The return of L’Angliru and the Vuelta of L’Angliru. The two go together because almost every analysis of the ´08 Vuelta course has wound up pointing towards this colossal summit in Asturias. The Vuelta has not returned since 2002 to a peak that now forms part of the race’s history and legend after only three ascents.
Nevertheless, L’Angliru will not be alone in the spotlight on this day. For starters, the cyclists’ bodies will be refreshed from a day of rest, an essential breather in the face of a 209 kilometre stage which includes three other 1st category climbs at Arnicio, Colladona and Cordal. It will be very tough if it doesn't rain. If it does rain, it could be hell on wheels.
History: The Vuelta climbed up to L'Angliru in 1999, 2000 and 2002. Three ascents. Three victories by great climbers and countless anecdotes and suffering to overcome what may possibly be the climb most hated by some professional cyclists, especially the time trial specialists, but is undoubtedly the most beloved one of true cycling enthusiasts and even casual fans.
