Commentary of the stage

The 11th stage of the 2008 Vuelta is one of those days rated by journalists as a “transition” stage, one of the terms most-hated by professional racers. But the truth is that there is only one 3rd category climb over its 178 kilometres and the summit is almost 40 kilometres from the finish line.

The day will start off from the town of Calahorra (La Rioja) and end up in Burgos, already at the door of the mountain range in Cantabria. Redecilla del Camino and Ibeas de Juarros will host the two flying sprints of the day.

History: Calahorra has celebrated the start of a Vuelta stage three times while Burgos has been the site of a stage finish on more than a dozen occasions. Logic would dictate a sprint finish this time, too, although Egoi Martínez successfully finished off a great solo breakaway here in 2006.
