La Vuelta will meet again the mythical tops of Sierra
Nevada in a stage that will start in the fertile region of El Ejido and that
will last for almost 200 kilometres. The route presents two passes that will
probably be two key points in the race that day: Bérchules, a second
category climb, in the first stretch and Lanzarón, a third category
climb.
Sierra Nevada started to be famous with Felipe Yañez in 1979, who repeated his victory in 1986. In 1981 there was time trial raced there where the Italian rider Battaglin was winner. The champion Tony Rominger was protagonist as well in 1994 along these tops and it was in 1997 when La Vuelta climbed to Sierra Nevada for the last time. That year the winner in these mountains was the French rider Ledanois, on the very same day that Dufaux snatched the first position overall from Jalabert. Sierra Nevada could give us a new leader overall. |
