Very close to Madrid we find Ávila and Serranillos. The great effort made by the survivors of the race usually asks something in return when the riders reach the city of Ávila. This time we are here in the last mountainous stages and here the differences will be settled.

Alto de la Hoya is the first pass we find when leave Béjar, though the last stretch is very well-known by the riders with Serrranillos pass (1st category) and Navalmoral (2nd category) placed 22 kilometres to go. Reaching Navalmoral with advantage means success, though we have to take into account the high speed the riders get along the climb down from the pass. In 2000, the stage between Salamanca and Ávila was won by Mariano Piccoli, leaving a group of 21 riders just after him.

Ávila welcomed La Vuleta for the first time in 1971 when Zoetemelk was the winner. Among this historical walls winners such as Bernard Hinault, Martínez Oliver, Jañabert, Rominger or Dufaux celebrated their success.
