La Vuelta meets again the mythical Pajares mountain pass.
The pass that wrote its name in the history books of La Vuelta will serve
this time as a kind of launch pad towards León. Travelling from Pajares
to León on a bike means high speed. Besides, those who had climbed
Angliru without much effort and after a day off will have to face this stage
searching the victory.
Those who want to win La Vuelta must control their rivals, but they will find it difficult to stop those who are pursuing the triumph in León. This city has welcomed many winners and many losers as well in the history of La Vuelta. The first time La Vuelta arrived in León was in 1945 and on that occasion the winner was Julián Berrendero. In the last edition we arrived in León from Valladolid, in a 140 kilometre-long stage won by Erik Zabel in front of Robbie McEwen and Danilo Hondo. They rode at an average speed of 46 kilometres per hour and the peloton was divided. In 1999, the speed was very similar and they reached León from Salamanca winning, that time, Marcel Wusst in front of McEwen and Mario Traversoni. |
