The people from Cantabria have always been very enthusiasts
of cycling and cyclists; getting to Santander means getting to the complicated
and tough mountain passes. The first stretch of the stage can help the adventurers
try a break and the teams control the race and impose their rules in the
second part of the race.
The first 100 kilometres could bring about many attempts to break away till we reach Alto del Portillo de la Sía, a first category pass and never easy. The last 50 kilometres are not easy and from Alto de la Fuente de las Varas to Santander the race will offer tense moments. The Italian rider Piccoli was the last winner in the streets of Santander in 2000. But Santander is one of the cities that more times has welcomed Vuelta a España . The first time was in 1935. In 1981, the tour started here with a time trial that was won by Clere. Many famous riders have achieved their victory in Santander, among them we can mention the champion Francesco Moser as well as Spanish riders such as San Emeterio, Blanco Villar and Roberto Torres. |
